2023 BMW Championship Preview

The PGA Tour heads to Olympia Fields, Illinois, for the 2023 BMW Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club (North) following Lucas Glover's back-to-back victories at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and Wyndham Championship.

This is the second week of the FedExCup Playoffs with just 50 players in the field before the top 30 advance to next week's TOUR Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.

The BMW Championship returns to Olympia Fields for the first time since 2020, when Jon Rahm captured a dramatic walk-off playoff victory over Dustin Johnson in a battle between the then-No. 2 and No. 1 golfers in the world.

Rahm won that tournament despite firing a first-round 75 (+5) that put him eight shots behind the first-round leaders at -3. He rallied all the way back thanks to a final-round 64 — the only round under 65 from any player that week — and a clutch 66-foot birdie putt in the playoff.

Jon Rahm (10/1 outright) wins the BMW Championship after sinking a 66 foot putt for birdie.

Rahm enters with the third-shortest outright betting odds this week at +950. The Spaniard has the most wins on the PGA Tour this season (four) and remains at the top of the FedExCup Standings despite a T37 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in his first start since The Open Championship, where he finished T2.

Defending 2022 BMW Championship winner Patrick Cantlay has the fourth-shortest outright odds this week at +1100. The former UCLA Bruin is actually coming off of consecutive wins at the BMW Championship in both 2022 at Wilmington Country Club and 2021 at Caves Valley Golf Club as he looks for a three-peat this week.

Cantlay enters with momentum after finishing runner-up to Glover in a playoff this past Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The 2021 FedExCup winner is the highest-ranked player in the FedExCup standings (fifth) who has not yet won on the PGA Tour this season, but he does have seven top-five finishes on Tour over this span.

Cantlay finished T12 at Olympia Fields in the 2020 BMW Championship.

Scottie Scheffler, who enters second on the FedExCup points list, opened as the tournament's co-favorite at bet365 at +800 alongside with defending FedExCup winner, Rory McIlroy, who ranks third in the FedExCup standings.

Scheffler leads the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Total, SG: Tee to Green and SG: Approach while ranking second in SG: Off the Tee. His putting (146th in SG: Putting) has held him back, but he still has a great chance to win his first FedExCup and Player of the Year honors with a solid finish to the playoffs.

Scheffler is coming off of a T31 finish this past weekend in Memphis after he put a new putter in the bag — he switched from a Scotty Cameron blade to a TaylorMade Spider mallet — but still lost strokes putting for the week. He finished in a tie for 20th at the 2020 BMW Championship at Olympia Fields in his only professional appearance here.

Rory McIlroy recorded his eighth consecutive top-nine finish with a T3 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, as he was just one shot out of the playoff behind Cantlay and Glover. The three-time FedExCup champion finished T12 at Olympia Fields in 2020 and is looking for his third win on Tour this season.

Like Scheffler, McIlroy also put a new putter in the bag last week, moving from a TaylorMade Spider to a Scotty Cameron Phantom X. But unlike Scheffler, McIlroy gained strokes putting at TPC Southwind.

McIlroy is also seeking his second BMW Championship victory after winning in 2012 at Crooked Stick Golf Club.

Lucas Glover, who is looking for his third PGA Tour win in as many weeks, has opened at +3500 odds at bet365. After sitting 112th in the FedEx Cup Standings just two weeks ago, his wins vaulted him to 49th last week and now fourth after his win in Memphis.

The former Clemson Tiger has recorded top-six finishes in five of his last six starts. Now, he'll see Olympia Fields for the first time as a professional this week.

Olympia Fields Country Club Course Preview

Olympia Fields Country Club (North) is a 7,366-yard par-70 with two par-5s, four par-3s and 12 par-4s. Eight of the 12 par-4s are at least 440 yards, and both par-5s are over 600 yards, so distance off the tee figures to play a significant role this week.

Willie Park Jr. designed the North Course in 1923, and Mark Mungeam served as the renovation architect in 2013.

Olympia Fields Country Club dates back to 1915, and the North Course was the fourth course added to the property. After financial challenges during World War II, the club sold half of its land and consolidated the first three courses into the South Course, while the fourth course became the North Course.

The North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club has a storied history, as it has hosted four men's major championships (the 1928 and 2003 U.S. Opens and the 1925 and 1961 PGA Championships) along with the 2017 KPMG Women's PGA Championship, the 2015 U.S. Amateur (won by Bryson DeChambeau) and the 1997 U.S. Senior Open.

The course features four-plus-inch Kentucky bluegrass rough, while the rest of the course is comprised of a Bentgrass/Poa annua mix, including the fairways and greens, which will be rolling at a 12.5 on the Stimpmeter. Overall, there are 91 bunkers at the North Course, and water is in play on eight of the 18 holes.

The 2020 BMW Championship is the only prior event with Strokes Gained data for Olympia Fields Country Club. In that event, SG: Putting and SG: Approach were most highly correlated with SG: Total.

SG: Off the Tee was less correlated with SG: Total than it would've been at an average PGA Tour course. However, driving distance saw an increase in correlation with SG: Total, while driving accuracy saw a slight decrease.

SG: Around the Green also saw a boost in its correlation with SG: Total as well, with bunkers and thick rough serving as penalties for inaccurate approaches.

Find the North Course tour (with videos and descriptions) on the Olympia Fields Country Club website here.
