How to Play Roulette

Roulette is a popular casino table game that is played by dropping a ball into a spinning wheel that is composed of 38 numbered pockets that are alternatively colored red or black. There are also two green colored pockets at opposite ends of the wheel from one another.* Players bet on which number or color the ball will land within the wheel when it stops. Simply, those who guess the correct outcome win.

*This layout describes the American Roulette Wheel layout. There are some variations between roulette wheels depending on location (i.e. European Wheel).

At the most basic level, playing roulette is as simple as correctly guessing where the ball will stop on the wheel. However, this is an oversimplified version of the game as there is multitude of bets that players can make for each spin. Below is an overview of the various bet types:

Roulette Bets: Inside vs. Outside

Bets in roulette are commonly grouped into two categories: inside bets and outside bets. Players indicate the bet that they want to make by placing their chip(s) on designated spots on the table.

Inside vs. outside bets

Inside Bets

An inside bet is a wager placed on a specific number or set of numbers. The numbers are located on the inner most part of the roulette table, surrounded by the outside bets, hence the name. These bets have a lower probability of hitting, so the payout is worth more on an inside bet. There are several variations of an inside bet listed below.

Straight Up Bet

This is the most basic inside bet where a player places a wager on a single number. If the ball lands on that number, the player will win. This bet is made by placing a chip directly on the desired number.

Example: A player places a chip on 17. This bet will only win if the ball lands on 17.

Split Bet

A split bet is a wager on two numbers next to each other on the board. If the ball lands on either of the two numbers, the player will win. This bet is made by placing a chip on the line the separates the two numbers on the board.

Example: A player places a chip on the dividing line of 29 and 32. This bet will win if the ball lands on either 29 or 32.

Street Bet

A street bet groups three numbers of a single row into one wager. If the ball lands on any of the three numbers in the row, the player will win. This bet is made by placing a chip on the outer edge line of the desired betting row.

Example: A player places a chip on the outer edge of 3. This bet will win if the ball lands on 1, 2, or 3.

Corner Bet

A corner bet includes four numbers. If the ball lands on any of the four numbers that make up the desired corner, the player will win. This bet is made by placing a chip on the "crosshair" mark of four connected numbers.

Example: A player places a chip on the crosshairs of 17, 18, 20, and 21. This bet will win if the ball lands on 17, 18, 20, or 21.

Line Bet

A line bet groups two rows together, creating six winning possibilities. If the ball lands on any of the six numbers designated in the line bet, a player will win. This bet is made by placing a chip on outer "T" intersection that the two lines share.

Example: A player places a chip on the "T" intersection of 12 and 15. This bet will win if the ball lands on 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 15.

Five Bet

The Five Bet (also known as the Basket Bet) is when a player bets on the top row (1-3) AND the zero segments together. If the ball lands on any of the five numbers in the "basket", the player will win. This bet is made by placing a chip on the corner of 1 and the 0 segments of the table.

Example: A player places a chip at the shared corner of 1 and 0. This bet will land if the ball lands on 00, 0, 1, 2, or 3.

Outside Bets

Outside bets are often referred to as 50/50 bets, but don't be fooled, the odds aren't actually that good. This bet type encompasses a variety of higher probability wagers that have lower payouts. It's worth nothing that there are two types of outside bets: even money and 2 to 1. Even money bets simply mean that a wager will win the same amount of money bet. For example, a $100 bet will return $100 in profit. With 2 to 1 bets, though, you have the chance to win more money, but they'll be harder to hit. Using the same $100 example, a winner could see a return of $200 instead on a 2 to 1 bet. Below is a description of each outside bet.

Red/Black Bets

This is one of the most popular outside bets where users simply have to choose which color pocket the ball will land. If the ball lands on any number of the correct color, the player will win. This bet is made by placing a chip on the red or black diamonds on the table.

ExampleA player places a chip on the black space. This bet will win if the ball lands on any number with a black colored pocket.

Odd/Even Bets

Another highly popular roulette wager, bettors simply have to guess whether the ball will land on an odd or even number (excluding zeros). This bet is made by placing a chip on the marked odd or even sections of the table.

ExampleA player places a chip on "Even". This bet will win if the ball lands on any even number.

1-18 Bets

Players can split the roulette wheel in half by high or low ends. 1-18 bets give players the option to bet on the lower half of the wheel. If the ball lands on any number from 1-18, the player will win. This bet is made by placing a chip on the 1-18 space on the table.

Example: A player places a chip on the "1-18" slot. The bet will win if the ball lands on any number within that range.

19-36 Bets

19-36 bets give players the option to bet on the higher half of the wheel. If the ball lands on any number from 9-36, the player will win. The bet is made by placing a chip on the 9-36 space on the table.

Example: A player places a chip on the "9-36" slot. The bet will win if the ball lands on any number within that range.

Dozen Bets

Players can split the wheel into thirds by betting on the first dozen (1-12), second dozen (13-24), or the third doze (25-36). If the ball lands within the player's chosen dozen, they will win. This bet is made by placing a chip on the "1st 12", "2nd 12", or "3rd 12" spaces on the table.

Example: A player places a chip on the "2nd 12" space on the table. If the ball lands on any number from 13-24, the bet will win.

Column Bets (2 to 1)

Column bets are those that offer 2 to 1 odds. This is a bet on an entire column. If the ball lands on any number in the chosen column, the player will win. This bet is made by placing a chip in the space after the last number in the column.

Example: A player places a chip in the 2 to 1 space below 36. If the ball lands on 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, or 36, the bet will win.
