• February 23, 2023 — PointsBet withdraws it's MA sports betting license, becoming the second sportsbook to leave the online market (bet365 was the first sportsbook). It was also revealed that Encore Boston Harbor once again accepted illegal wagers on the women's BC Eagles team.
• February 19, 2023 — MGC Executive Director Karen Wells confirmed that MA sports betting can be performed three miles outside the Massachusetts coast on legalized sportsbooks.
• February 17, 2023 — Fanatics announces that it won't be ready to launch in March with other licensed online sportsbooks.
• February 15, 2023 — The MGC reported $510,948 in sports betting handle on the first day betting launched, which was back on Jan. 31. 2023. Massachusetts took in $9,861 in tax revenue on this day alone. Encore Boston Harbor is the only casino to report losses ($75,230 in total) from sports wagering on the same day. 
• February 14, 2023 — MGM Springfield also allowed wagers to be placed on two recent Harvard basketball games. All self-reported sports betting compliance violations are under review.
• February 9, 2023 — Massachusetts Gaming Commission Executive Director Karen Wells has proposed the MA online sports betting launch to begin on March 10, 2023.
• February 8, 2023 — It was reported that Encore Boston Harbor and Plainridge Park Casino accepted wagers on in-state college basketball teams, which is against MA sports betting law. This puts controversy on WynnBET and Barstool only eight days after MA sports betting launched in three state casinos.
• January 31, 2023 — In-person sports betting in Massachusetts launches at three casinos.

Massachusetts Sports Betting Tax Rate

It took a lot of back and forth before state lawmakers agreed on the MA sports betting bill H.5164.

Remember that betting on Massachusetts colleges remains prohibited and is only permitted on schools from other states. During the discussion surrounding collegiate sports betting, state lawmakers finally compromised on an in-state ban on the final day of the last legislative session. 

Massachusetts policymakers have had to weigh a myriad of growing and influential gaming interests, starting with the nation’s most lucrative per capita state lottery and continuing with the more recent launch of full-scale commercial casino resorts. Additionally, operators will not be able to deduct promo revenue from their taxable income as they have in nine other states. About 9% of tax revenue will fund problem gaming and addiction research.
