Iowa State University quarterback Hunter Dekkers has been accused of betting on his team, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Story County Attorney's office in Iowa.

Dekkers reportedly controlled a DraftKings account not under his name that placed 366 wagers totaling more than $2700, the Des Moines Register reported on Tuesday. The criminal complaint claimed that he was aided by the help of his parents because he was under the age of 21.

Dekkers was charged with tampering with records relating to the investigation conducted by the Iowa Criminal Division.

“This charge attempts to criminalize a daily fact of American life," the law firm representing Dekkers said in a statement. "Millions of people share online accounts of all kinds every day."

The report also alleges that 26 of those bets were placed on Iowa State sporting events, including a 2021 football game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in which the Cyclones were seven-point favorites but failed to cover in a 24-21 win. Dekkers did not play in that contest.

In May, Iowa State University reported at least 15 of its own student-athletes that the university said were alleged to have been involved in illicit sports gambling, including football, wrestling and track and field athletes.

NCAA rules ban collegiate athletes from wagering on almost every sport. These rules also encompass other forms of “sports betting.” For instance, NCAA athletes can’t join fantasy football leagues or March Madness brackets that involve money.
