Iowa Sports Betting Scandal: Multiple Players Facing Allegations of Improper Wagering

Iowa kicker Aaron Blom and former University of Iowa basketball player Ahron Ulis have been charged with tampering with records from Iowa regulators' investigation into college sports gambling.
The news came after Iowa State starting quarterback Hunter Dekkers was charged with the same crime on Tuesday.
Blom — who was underaged when the alleged bets were placed — concealed his identity using his mother's name to set up a DraftKings account. The account was set up with Blom's mother's permission, court documents allege.
Meanwhile, Ulis — who transferred to Nebraska — placed wagers under an account named "Anton Porter," allegedly his older brother.
Dekkers was charged after a similar alleged circumstance. The QB was underaged and used family members to conceal his bets, too, according to the criminal complaint. Some of those wagers included reported bets on Iowa State games.
The Iowa kicker wagered about $4,400 over 170 bets, including a bet on the under of 2021's Iowa vs. Iowa State football game, the complaint said. Blom did not participate in that game and served as the backup kicker last season.
Meanwhile, Ulis wagered about $35,000 in total on 1,850 bets via FanDuel, the complaint reported.
In May, an investigation by Iowa regulators found that at least 41 student-athletes across the two universities were reported for potentially illicit betting activity.
NCAA rules ban collegiate athletes from wagering on almost every sport. Any sport that the NCAA operates — from football all the way down to fencing — are off limits. That includes wagers in any country, at any skill level. For instance, a field hockey player can’t bet on the NFL, even if they aren’t privy to any insider information or otherwise.
These rules also encompass other forms of “sports betting.” For instance, NCAA athletes can’t join fantasy football leagues or March Madness brackets that involve money.
And at the criminal level, it is illegal to place a wager under the age of 21.
