What to Look for When Choosing a NY Sportsbook App

Mobile App Experience

When you are sorting through your sportsbook options, you'll want to make sure your app of choice offers a seamless mobile experience. Some of the questions you'll want to ask yourself as you're browsing an app are:

  • What is the app's organization like? Can you log in easily and navigate your way through the menus pretty easily? No one wants to sift through a cluttered and confusing app that could leave the user lost.
  • How is the app's search function? Can you find the sports and bet types you want quickly?
  • How is the app speed? Is there chugging or constant slowdowns as you make your inputs?
  • What is the game density like? If an app gets this right, it means you're able to make your betting decisions faster because the data that's provided is helpful and concise.

Sign-Up Offers

One of the most important decisions you can make as a sports bettor happens when you choose a sportsbook app. When you sign up, you're selecting which sign-up offer you want to take advantage of. Operators incentivize bettors with several different bonus options, like a first "risk-free" bet up to $1,000; or bet $50 and get $200 no matter what. Make sure you do your research because one bonus that is best for one bettor might not be what's most enticing to you.

Promotions

Sportsbook apps work hard to attract new users, but what about the loyal bettors who have stuck with their brand for a while? That's where promotions come in. The type and regularity of promotions an app offers can vary. For example, BetMGM offers a "Money Monday Club" promotion. This promotion offers users the chance to place a combined $50 or more in qualifying wagers throughout the week, as well as get a $10 free bet to use on any game.

Sports Betting Options

Many sportsbooks offer similar betting options, but you should make sure to check the one you want to play features your preferred gaming choice. Look at the new markets, price boosts, in-game props, player props, parlay choices, and more that an app usually features.

Payment Options

Not all sports betting apps offer the same withdrawal and deposit options, so be sure to pick one that has your preferred payment methods. You should also keep in that each app has its unique withdrawal and deposit speed, so if you want to access your winners quicker, be sure to research which app best suits your needs.

NY Sports Betting Background and Regulations

The first retail sportsbooks went live in New York in 2019, then online sports betting launched in The Empire State in January 2022.

New York generated $42 million in sports betting taxes in its first month alone, thanks to its industry-high 51% tax rate for operators. While New York continues to shatter tax revenue records, state lawmakers are hoping to reshape New York’s sports betting market and create a model that is more sustainable long term. The betting handle in the state has steadily dropped as operators continue to be hit hard by the crippling tax rate.

Some goals lawmakers hope to make a reality in New York include:

  • Dropping the current 51% tax rate on online sports betting to 35% by 2023, triggered by the addition of at least five more operators to the current nine-book market.
  • Lowering the tax rate to 25% by 2024, triggered by adding at least two more operators (16 total).
  • A tax exemption on all revenue attributed to free play or promotional wagers.
  • First-dibs on additional licenses for two minority-owned sportsbooks.

What Can You Bet on in New York?

We've discussed some of the NY betting app options you'll have at your disposal, but you might be wondering, what exactly can you bet on?

NY sports bettors have plenty of choices at their disposal, including:

  • Point Spreads

  • First Half & Second Half
  • Totals aka "Over/Unders
  • Futures
  • Player Props

If you're a NY bettor, you can place a wager on pretty much any sport you can think of, including the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, English Premier League, the PGA Tour and more. You'll also find boxing, tennis and Formula One as available options.

What Can't You Bet on in New York?

You can also bet on college sports, like NCAA football and basketball games. However, it's important to note that you cannot place bets on New York college teams like Syracuse men's basketball or Army football. Regardless if they're playing their game in New York or not, all bets involving New York college teams are off-limits.

Another restriction to keep in mind is that you cannot place bets on in-state collegiate events. That means no wagering on NCAA hoops tournaments, like the Big East Tournament, at Madison Square Garden.
